7 Things to Know Before Booking a Utah Garden Venue

Booking a garden venue is one of the biggest decisions you'll make while planning your wedding — and one of the least straightforward. Between rack rates, seasonal pricing, and what's actually included in your rental, it's easy to compare venues on price alone and miss the details that matter more. Here's what to know before you sign a contract.
1. "Garden venue" can mean very different things
Some venues offer a single outdoor ceremony space with an indoor reception room elsewhere on the property. Others are true garden estates, where the grounds themselves — not just one ceremony backdrop — are part of the experience from the moment guests arrive to the moment they leave.
Before you tour, ask how much of your event will actually take place in the garden versus how much is "garden-adjacent." A venue with one photo-worthy arch corner is a different product than a venue designed around its landscaping.

2. Pricing usually depends on the day of the week, not just the date
Most venues price Saturdays highest, with meaningful discounts for Friday, Sunday, and weekday weddings. If your date is flexible even by a day or two, you may unlock a significantly lower rate without changing the season or the venue.
It's worth asking directly for a full rate sheet broken out by day type rather than a single quoted number — some venues will only volunteer the Saturday rate unless you ask.
3. Peak and off-season pricing can shift by thousands of dollars
In Utah, peak wedding season generally runs May through October, when demand — and pricing — is highest. Off-season months (November through April) often come with substantially lower rates for the exact same venue and services.
If you're not attached to a warm-weather date, off-season booking can be one of the most effective ways to access a higher-tier venue within your budget. Just be sure to ask how the venue handles weather contingencies for an off-season outdoor ceremony.
4. Ask whether the venue rents as a whole or by individual space
Some properties allow you to book only the specific room or area you need. Others — particularly full-estate garden venues — rent as a single, complete property for your event, with all spaces (indoor and outdoor) included in one rate.
This matters for your planning: a whole-venue rental typically means exclusive access, no other events happening simultaneously, and more flexibility to spread your day across multiple spaces, but it's a different pricing model than an à la carte one. Know which one you're comparing before you compare prices.

5. Look closely at what counts as a "set-up fee"
Many venues charge a separate set-up fee on top of the base rental rate, especially for spaces that require additional preparation — string lighting, ceremony seating, arch installation, or outdoor-specific logistics like weather backup plans.
These fees vary a lot by which space you're using, so a venue's advertised starting rate may not reflect your actual total. When you get a quote, ask for an itemized breakdown that separates the base rental from any per-space set-up costs.

6. Exclusivity affects both price and experience
A venue that hosts only one event per day is offering something different from one that turns over multiple events in a single day.
Single-event exclusivity usually costs more, but it also means your vendors have the entire day for setup and breakdown, your photos won't include another couple's decor in the background, and your guests won't be sharing parking or restrooms with a different party. If a lower price feels too good relative to comparable venues, ask directly how many events the venue books per day.

7. A tour tells you things a website can't
Photos are curated. A walkthrough shows you the sound of a fountain during a quiet moment, how far the ceremony space is from the reception area, where the sun sits at your ceremony time, and how the grounds actually feel to move through with fifty or a hundred guests.
Before booking, walk the full space at (or close to) the time of day your ceremony will happen, and ask to see the venue during an active setup if possible — it tells you more about logistics than any brochure will.
Choosing a garden venue comes down to matching the right property, season, and day to your vision and your budget — not just finding the lowest number on a rate sheet. Asking these questions up front will save you from surprises later and help you compare venues on what actually matters.
